The New Smart Bullet

Los Angeles Tech News

Self guided ammunition is currently being devolved by the US army.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is currently developing this crazy new technology, and they just recently announced that they overcame another milestone to making this a reality. The military released some sweet footage of .50 caliber bullets making very sharp turns in mid air to change course and hit their target.

Back in February the “smart bullets” which were equipped with optical sensors passed its most impressive test yet in which we saw some sweet footage of .50 caliber bullets making very sharp turns in mid air to change course and hit their target.

This system is being devolved by a sector of DARPA called the Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance program, or EXACTO as they call it.

“True to DARPA’s mission, EXACTO has demonstrated what was once thought impossible: the continuous guidance of a small-caliber bullet to target,” said Jerome Dunn, DARPA program manager. “This live-fire demonstration from a standard rifle showed that EXACTO is able to hit moving and evading targets with extreme accuracy at sniper ranges unachievable with traditional rounds. Fitting EXACTO’s guidance capabilities into a small .50-caliber size is a major breakthrough and opens the door to what could be possible in future guided projectiles across all calibers,” Dunn said.

The video footage as mentioned above shows bullets making midair turns, so snipers in high winds should have an easier time at hitting their marks. “The goals of the EXACTO program are giving shooters accuracy at greater distances, engaging targets sooner and enhancing the safety of American troops,” DARPA said.
